These terms govern your use of the Horcrux Mac app, website, licensing service, and related support. By downloading, purchasing, or using Horcrux, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use Horcrux.

1. The Horcrux license

Horcrux is licensed, not sold. A valid purchase grants you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use the purchased major version on Macs you own or control, subject to the applicable store's usage rules.

You may not resell, sublicense, distribute, rent, share a license key outside your household or business, or bypass licensing or security controls. These restrictions do not limit rights that applicable law does not permit us to restrict.

Apps obtained through the Mac App Store are also subject to Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement and applicable App Store usage rules.

2. Evaluation

Horcrux may be used in a non-expiring limited evaluation before purchase. Evaluation supports one email account, manual local backups, and a fixed cohort of up to 500 messages. It does not include automatic schedules or additional and remote Backup Locations. Purchasing Horcrux removes those evaluation limits.

3. Purchases and upgrades

Horcrux 5 is offered through one-time and annual-supporter choices. New customers pay $49.99 USD once or annually. Customers who purchased Horcrux 1 through 4 may pay $29.99 USD once or $29.99 for the first annual-supporter year, with later annual renewals at $49.99. The first successful, non-refunded payment through any option permanently unlocks the features included in Horcrux 5. Future compatibility depends on factors such as macOS, email providers, storage providers, and third-party services that we do not control.

A purchase does not promise that every future major version will be free. A future major version may have its own full and upgrade prices without revoking the major version you already purchased.

Each non-recurring full purchase or paid major-version upgrade includes one year of private Priority Support beginning on its transaction date. Annual supporters receive Priority Support throughout each paid subscription period.

4. Billing and refunds

Direct purchases and annual-supporter plans are sold and processed by Paddle as merchant of record. Paddle handles applicable taxes, payment methods, invoices, and buyer rights under its checkout terms. App Store purchases and subscriptions are billed by Apple. Refund requests are handled under the policy of the store that processed the purchase and any mandatory rights that apply where you live.

You may cancel an annual-supporter plan before renewal. Cancellation ends Priority Support after the paid period and never removes permanent Horcrux ownership earned by a successful payment. A full refund or transaction revocation may remove the entitlement granted by that transaction. One-time customers may optionally start Priority Support later at the standard annual price.

5. Your responsibilities

  • Use Horcrux only with email accounts and storage you are authorized to access.
  • Keep your Mac, account credentials, license key, and backup destinations secure.
  • Maintain enough available storage and keep removable or network destinations connected when needed.
  • Review backup status and occasionally browse or verify saved email. No backup system should be your only copy of critical information.
  • Comply with laws, provider terms, and workplace policies that apply to the email you back up.

6. Third-party services

Horcrux can connect to services operated by others, including email providers, Apple, Paddle, SFTP hosts, and Amazon S3. Their availability, security, pricing, and terms are controlled by those providers. We are not responsible for changes, outages, data loss, account restrictions, or other actions by a third-party service.

7. Availability and support

We aim to keep Horcrux useful for a long time, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. Features may change when needed for security, provider compatibility, law, or technical reliability. The community forum has no guaranteed response. Active Priority Support provides private technical assistance with a target initial human response within two business days; that target is not a guarantee of resolution within that period.

8. Warranty and liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Horcrux and its related services are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties beyond any mandatory consumer rights. You are responsible for confirming that your backups are complete and usable.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Horcrux will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost email, data, profits, business, or opportunities. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limits mandatory consumer protections.

9. Suspension and termination

We may suspend access to online purchase or licensing services when reasonably necessary to address fraud, abuse, security threats, nonpayment, or material violation of these terms. A permanent entitlement already downloaded for a legitimate purchase may continue working offline. Ending an online service does not give us ownership of backup files already stored on systems you control.

10. Changes and contact

We may update these terms for future use of Horcrux or its online services. Material changes will be communicated when required by law. If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply.

Questions about these terms can be sent through our contact form.
